TOPIC: DAVID, THE MAN AFTER GOD’S OWN HEART
TEXT: 1 Samuel 13:13-14
Then Samuel told Saul, “You have acted foolishly. You haven’t obeyed the commandment of the LORD your God, which he commanded you. For then the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel forever, but now your kingdom won’t be established. The LORD has sought for himself a man after his own heart, and the LORD has appointed him as Commander-in-Chief over his people because you didn’t obey that which the LORD commanded you.”
THE GENEALOGY OF DAVID
This name, David, from a root meaning “to love.” The only person who bears this name in the Bible is the son of Jesse, David, the second king of Israel.
The following points are to be noted:
David belonged to the tribe of Judah: his ancestor Nahshon was chieftain of the whole tribe (Numbers 1:7; Numbers 2:3; 1 Chronicles 2:10) and brother-in-law of Aaron the high priest (Exodus 6:23).
As no other descendants of Nahshon are mentioned, his authority probably descended to Jesse by right of primogeniture. This supposition is countenanced by the fact that Salma (Salmon), the name of the son of Nahshon and father of Boaz, is also the name of a grandson of Caleb who became “father” of Bethlehem, the home of Jesse (1 Chronicles 2:51).
David was closely connected with the tribe of Moab, the mother of his grandfather Obed being Ruth the Moabitess. Of the wife or wives of Jesse we know nothing, and consequently are without information upon a most interesting point – the personality of the mother of David; but that she too may have been of the tribe of Moab is rendered probable by the fact that, when hard pressed, David placed his parents under the protection of the king of that country (1 Samuel 22:3, 1 Samuel 22:1 ).
David was known as the man after God’s own heart, meaning David was one of God’s favorites. It also means David, with all his human mistakes, pleased God and had God in his heart.
Why heart and not something else?
THE MEANING OF A HEART
A heart is the seat of the affections or sensibilities, collectively or separately, as love, hate, joy, grief, courage, etc.
The seat of the understanding or will; usually in a good sense; personality.
Which means all the nasty stuffs are from the heart. Every good thing is from the heart, and so as bad thing. If you are pure your heart is pure, and if you are wicked your heart is full of wickedness. Meaning your heart is the determinant of your actions.
Therefore, beloved, allow Christ to cleanse your heart. Christ knocks at your door (your heart) (Revelation 3:21).
Are you ready to open for Him?
WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A PERSON AFTER GOD’S OWN HEART
A person who desires to be in God’s good books like David should possess the following:
- A righteous heart
- A heart full of mercy
- A forgiving heart
- A loving heart
- A good heart
David pleased God and was referred to as the man after God’s own heart, who are you pleasing, God or man?
