YouVersion, creator of the world’s most popular Bible app with more than 1 billion downloads across its family of applications, has launched a regional hub in Kenya to boost localized content and partnerships in Africa.
The hub, officially opened in Nairobi on Feb. 23, aims to make the app more relevant to users in the region by increasing African-language content and strengthening ties with local churches and content providers.
YouVersion Founder and CEO Bobby Gruenewald told attendees at the launch event that the organization had recognized the need for on-the-ground presence in key regions.
“We realized quite some time ago that we were going to one day need to have offices and people placed in different parts of the world. We felt like that day had come,” Gruenewald said.
The company began establishing regional hubs more than a year ago, starting with locations in Brazil and Mexico City, followed by Australia. The initiative has now expanded to Africa with hubs in Kenya and South Africa, with plans for further growth in Europe.
Gruenewald highlighted Kenya’s strong adoption of the app, noting 19 million installs and approximately 3 million active monthly users. He described the hub as a way to serve existing momentum rather than initiate new growth.
“We’re actually not here to start something. We’re really here to serve something that God has already been doing in this country,” Gruenewald said in his keynote address. “The Christian faith has been a part of this continent for 2,000 years, shaped and led by Africans from the very beginning.”
He pointed to rapid increases in digital Bible engagement across Africa, with Nigeria surpassing 40 million installs and a 42% rise in daily use, while Ethiopia nears 5 million installs with a 94% increase in daily engagement over recent periods.
South Africa, Kenya and Nigeria rank among the top countries globally for daily Bible app engagement, Gruenewald said, adding: “Some people have predicted that Africa would become the center of global Christianity. From what we’re seeing, I think it already is.”
Kenya’s First Lady Rachael Ruto attended the launch and welcomed the development, saying it would bring hope to families and young people.
“Today, the Word of God travels at the speed of light through the internet. It reaches families. It reaches a student before an exam. It reaches us where we are,” Ruto said. “As a wife, a mother and a leader, I understand the importance of faith in strengthening families.”
She added that the hub’s impact would extend beyond Kenya to transform lives across the continent.
Beyond content localization, the Kenyan presence has informed product adaptations for African users, including the development of Bible App Lite for areas with high data costs, limited storage or poor connectivity. Insights from African communities since 2022 have influenced features now rolled out globally.
The app provides Scripture in nearly 2,400 languages worldwide, including Swahili, Afrikaans, Xhosa and Zulu, with Bible App for Kids available in languages such as Afrikaans and Swahili featuring interactive elements for children.
All YouVersion apps remain free to download and use, the organization says, to eliminate financial barriers to Bible access.
